Norman A200C Portable Battery Assembly Review
I tried various speed lights which include Canon's 580EX II, Vivitar 283, Sunpak's 120J parabolic, Metz 45CT4/CL4, even the Metz 76 MZ5 and others for wedding and special events. They all produce great results, but the Norman's tried and tested technology beats them all out in my opinion, although the Metz 76 gets pretty close. The Sunpak's 120J is also pretty good, but they are no longer manufactured and the build is very flimsy to say the least. As far as build quality, there is no match to the Normans these things are rugged.
Another thing I like about the Normans is that the heads are very light and portable and they are powerful. You can either use them above the camera, or off-camera attached to a light stand. I found the 400Bs which produce 400WS, a little too powerful for my needs, although you can turn the power down to 100WS. The 200C allows you to turn the power down to 50WS which is all you really need for a weddings or events at ISO 100/200. Unless you are constantly shooting large groups from a distance.
The parabolic reflector on the LH2K heads prevents quick light fall-off and you get nice, even, clean lighting. Add the diffusion reflector for soft lighting and minimum shadows. With a fully charged battery and the power pack set to 50WS you can easily get 600 shots or more, if your battery is in good condition. For weddings I carry 2, just in case.
The down side is that there is no TTL, or Automatic features for this flash unit. So everything has to be done in Manual Mode. To simplify things I tape a chart on the back of the head which tells me what aperture to use based on the subject-to-flash distance, power settings and the ISO. Unlike other more sophisticated units, this formula works 99% of the time. There are no misfires, or having the ETTL fooled by very light or very dark subjects. Also this flash is so powerful that you can shoot at apertures of f16 even f22 or more to get those crisp, sharp 'magazine like' images by simply turning up the power up another notch. This is sometimes hard to achieve using ETTL and Automatic.
Isn't the 200C a little bulky and heavy to carry ? Yes it is, especially compared to Speedlights that can be conveniently attached to the camera hot shoe, or above the camera with a flash bracket. Well that's the price you have to pay for quality lighting. This is one reason I use the Normans for the ceremony and speedlights for the reception. One good trick is to attach the battery to your waist using the carrying belt(sold by Norman), or better yet, just place the battery pack inside a back-pack and put the back-pack over your shoulders, you will hardly notice it there.
How about shooting vertically with this unit ? Attached to the 'CB Digital-T custom bracket' or similar flash brackets, you can easily and quickly shoot horizontals as well as verticals. All you have to do is flip the bracket and the camera. There are no complicated twists and turns and the bracket is very compact, light and looks professional.
For added movements such as bouncing from the ceilings and walls, you can add a mini Ball-Head between the bracket and the LH2 head, which is what I do. And there you go, you got a complete flexible, portable lighting system that produces superior results. So far this combination has worked the best for me, but units such as the Metz potato mashers have also worked excellently. There is no need for complicated 2 light set up with these units since the light is big enough to wrap around unlike the other units. Just point, focus, aim and shoot.
